Spring arrives in Bright

September is when Bright begins to change.

After the quieter colours of winter, fresh green growth starts appearing throughout the valley, blossoms emerge around town and the deciduous trees lining Bright’s streets gradually begin waking from their winter sleep.

On a sunny spring day, it is lovely simply to wander through town, follow the Ovens River or find somewhere outside for coffee or lunch.

And because spring is only just beginning, September still feels wonderfully peaceful.

Waterfalls are particularly beautiful in spring

If you enjoy waterfalls, this is a wonderful time to explore the High Country.

Winter rain and melting snow can mean good water flows through spring, making September an excellent month to visit some of the waterfalls around Bright and Mount Buffalo.

A favourite day trip is Mount Buffalo National Park, where you can stop at Ladies Bath and Eurobin Falls before continuing higher onto the mountain.

Allow plenty of time. One of the pleasures of Mount Buffalo is not having to rush from one attraction to another. Combine a waterfall walk with one of the mountain’s many lookouts, a picnic and perhaps another short walk while you are there.

Walk without the summer heat

September is also a lovely time to walk.

Closer to town, the Canyon Walk follows the Ovens River and is perfect for an easy morning or afternoon wander.

If you would like something slightly more energetic, Huggins Lookout or Apex Lookout will get the heart rate up and reward you with beautiful views over Bright and the surrounding mountains.

For a bigger day out, head towards Mount Buffalo or up the Great Alpine Road towards Mount Hotham.

Spring conditions in the alpine areas can change quickly and snow may still be present, so always check road, track and weather conditions before setting out.

Experience two seasons in one day

One of our favourite things about September is that you can experience two seasons in the same day.

Bright may be enjoying sunshine and spring flowers while the higher peaks are still capped in snow.

Take a drive along the Great Alpine Road towards Mount Hotham and the scenery can change remarkably quickly as you climb. Stop for a coffee or lunch along the way, take in the mountain views and then make your way back down into the valley.

Return to Bright for dinner, a glass of local wine and a cosy evening by the fire.

It is a hard combination to beat.

Enjoy Bright at a gentler pace

There are months when Bright is wonderfully busy.

September tends to have a different feel.

Outside the busier weekends and school holiday period, there can be more space to wander, ride, walk, stop somewhere for lunch and simply decide what you feel like doing next.

For us, that is exactly what a romantic getaway should be.

You do not necessarily need an itinerary filled from morning until night.

Spend the morning walking beside the river. Have a long lunch. Visit a winery or distillery. Pick up something delicious for later. Read on the deck for a while.

Sometimes the best part of going away is having nowhere else you need to be.

Bright’s food and wine scene is waiting too

A couple of nights in Bright also gives you an excellent excuse not to cook.

There are wonderful places around town for everything from coffee and a casual lunch to cocktails, share plates and a special dinner.

You could stop for a drink at Reed & Co Distillery, enjoy a relaxed meal at La Cigale or Tomahawks, or book somewhere cosy for dinner such as Sir Loins.

And if you feel like venturing a little further, there are wineries, farm gates and producers scattered throughout the surrounding valleys.

A little local flavour

If you enjoy browsing a local market while you are away, there are several around the region during September.

Depending on when you visit, you might catch the Mount Beauty Market, Porepunkah People’s Market, Bright Make It, Bake It, Grow It Market or Myrtleford Farmers Market.

They are a lovely little addition to a weekend away — pick up some local produce, have a wander and then get on with exploring the rest of the High Country.

And the evenings are still made for a fireplace

Perhaps the best thing about an early spring escape is that you get the best of both worlds.

Days can be spent outdoors enjoying the first warmth of spring, but evenings in the High Country can still be beautifully cool.

Which means September hasn’t quite finished with fireplace weather.

September brings longer days, fresh green growth, blossom through the valley and the first signs of wildflowers. Higher up, Mount Buffalo can still be holding onto patches of snow, while winter rain and melting snow help bring the waterfalls and mountain streams to life.

It’s one of our favourite times of year to get outside.

The mornings can still be crisp, the evenings are cool enough to enjoy the fire, and the walking conditions are often just right for exploring the High Country without the heat of summer.

Waterfalls Near Bright in Spring

Ladies Bath Falls and Eurobin Falls

If you only have time for one waterfall outing, this is an easy place to start.

Ladies Bath Falls and Eurobin Falls are both found on Mount Buffalo, making them easy to combine into the one adventure.

The walk to Ladies Bath follows Eurobin Creek through the forest before arriving at a series of granite pools and cascades. Continue further and you reach Eurobin Falls, where the water tumbles across the huge granite slabs that are so characteristic of Mount Buffalo.

After the wetter winter months, the creek and falls can be particularly beautiful.

It is a relatively short outing, which also makes it easy to combine with some of the other lookouts, walks and picnic spots on Mount Buffalo.

And part of the enjoyment is simply the drive up the mountain. The landscape changes surprisingly quickly as you leave the valley behind and climb into the alpine environment above Bright.

Rollasons Falls

For something a little quieter, Rollasons Falls is another beautiful Mount Buffalo walk.

The track winds through tall forest before dropping towards the falls, with an upper and lower viewing area.

It feels a little more tucked away than some of the better-known stops on the mountain, and the walk itself is as much a part of the experience as the waterfall.

Spring brings fresh growth to the forest and, if you’re lucky, you may hear lyrebirds calling from somewhere amongst the trees.

Remember that the return walk includes a climb back out, so save a little energy for the way home.

Fainter Falls

If your travels take you towards Mount Beauty or Falls Creek, Fainter Falls is well worth a stop.

The walk follows the river through the valley before reaching a series of viewing platforms overlooking the falls.

It is particularly lovely when there has been plenty of water flowing down from the mountains, and it makes a beautiful addition to a day exploring the Kiewa Valley.

You could easily turn the outing into a full spring day trip, stopping for a walk, lunch and a little exploring before returning to Bright.

More Than Just Waterfalls

Of course, waterfalls are only part of what makes September special.

Spring arrives gradually in the High Country.

Down in Bright, gardens and orchards begin to flower and the valley starts turning green again. Up on the mountains, winter can still be lingering.

On the right day you can be standing amongst blossom and sunshine in the valley while looking up towards snow still sitting on the peaks.

The wildlife around The Odd Frog becomes increasingly active too.

Kangaroos are regular visitors around the property, the birdlife becomes noticeably busier and the bush seems to wake up as the days begin to lengthen.

It’s a particularly beautiful time simply to slow down and notice what is happening around you.

Our Perfect Spring Day in Bright

If friends were visiting us in September and asked how we would spend a day, it might look something like this.

Start with a slow breakfast and coffee in Bright before heading towards Mount Buffalo.

Walk to Ladies Bath Falls and Eurobin Falls, then continue further up the mountain to explore one of the lookouts or take another short walk.

Find somewhere beautiful for lunch or pack a picnic and stay on the mountain a little longer.

On the way back to Bright, pick up some local cheese, bread, wine or produce for the evening.

Then head back to your treehouse.

Open the doors if the afternoon sun is shining, sit outside and listen to the birds, or settle in by the fire as the temperature begins to drop.

And if the weather turns a little cool or rainy?

That’s not necessarily a bad thing.

There is something rather lovely about listening to rain falling through the trees when you have nowhere you need to be.
